Over the next few weeks, you will be writing, reading and taking a deeper look at poetry. During this process you will put together a poetry scrapbook to collect your work.
Divide your poetry scapbook into THREE SECTIONS: FIRST STAGE, SECOND STAGE and THIRD STAGE.
The first stage of this unit is creating poetry in different forms; The introduction poem, the haiku, the cinquain, the circle poem, the extended metaphor poem and the number poem.
The second stage of the unit will be dealing with poetry terms. Some of these you may already know, most will be new. You will be finding poems containing different poetic devices.
The third stage is the study of one poem, which you will analyze, memorize and explain to the class.
This unit will take us up until the end of the year. The schedule for things is like this:
5/18 – 5/22: FIRST STAGE. Poetry forms and poetry writing.
5/18; haiku and cinquains
5/20; introduction poems and circle poems
5/22; Extended metaphor poems and number poems.
The final versions of these will be typed and placed in the
first section of your scrapbook, due 5/26
5/25 – 5/29 Terms will be defined, examples from real world poetry
included. This will be due in the second section of your
6/1-end THIRD STAGE. reciting, analyzing and explaining one existing poem.
